Check conditions before departure
Road and weather conditions can change quickly. Check the National Highways and Motorway Police travel advisory shortly before leaving; NHMP also directs travellers to helpline 130 and its official channels for current guidance and emergency assistance.
Plan fuel and rest stops before joining the motorway, especially during severe weather, holiday traffic or travel with children.
Prepare the vehicle
A motorway journey places different demands on a car than a short city booking. Resolve mechanical concerns before departure rather than relying on a roadside fix.
- Check tyre condition and pressure, including the spare or repair kit
- Check engine oil, coolant, windscreen wash and visible leaks
- Test lights, wipers, brakes and air-conditioning
- Carry the booking record, driving licence and vehicle documents
- Save the provider’s assistance contact and NHMP helpline 130
Drive for the conditions
NHMP advises drivers to use seat belts, maintain lane discipline, avoid mobile-phone use and never drive while fatigued. During rain, reduce speed, increase following distance and use headlights for visibility.
Follow posted limits and current official instructions. Temporary limits and closures can change, which is why a live advisory is more dependable than a number copied into an old article.
