Decide whether the journey should happen
The safest response to severe weather may be to delay non-essential travel. NHMP advises travellers to check weather and road conditions before departure and warns that rain can reduce visibility, make roads slippery and increase crash risk.
Check the current NHMP travel advisory and Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast shortly before leaving. Conditions may have changed since a route was planned.
Prepare for reduced grip and visibility
Check tyre condition, wipers, lights, brakes and windscreen demisting before departure. During rain, NHMP advises reducing speed, maintaining a safe following distance and using headlights for visibility.
- Avoid abrupt steering, acceleration and braking
- Leave more space than you would on a dry road
- Do not use a mobile phone while driving
- Stop safely if visibility becomes inadequate
- Never attempt to cross floodwater or a flooded channel
Treat standing water as an unknown hazard
Water can hide road damage and its depth or current may be difficult to judge. Turn back or use an officially advised alternative instead of assuming another vehicle’s crossing proves the route is safe.
